Two Separate Cuba-Destined Relief Ships Declared Missing subsequent to Setting Sail from Mexican Waters.
A comprehensive search and rescue operation is presently ongoing in the Caribbean waters for a duo of missing boats carrying aid cargo en route from the Mexican coast to Havana.
Maritime Search Efforts Initiated
Mexico has sent naval assets and search planes to find the two vessels, which were transporting no fewer than 9 personnel, according to a military release.
The boats had been expected to arrive in Havana on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been radio silence from them and no confirmation of their docking, authorities reported.
Background of Relief to the Nation
Cuba has depended significantly on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over recent weeks, as the island endures widespread national electricity failures.
"The crews and captains are veteran seafarers, and each boat are equipped with proper navigational gear and emergency beacons," a representative associated with the mission said.
The nine individuals on board are from the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexican authorities said it has been in touch with maritime rescue coordination centres from those nations along with their embassy officials.
"We are working closely with the relevant authorities and continue to be hopeful in the ability of the crews to make it to Cuba without incident," the statement continued.
Previous Humanitarian Delivery
Earlier in the week, the Cuban authorities warmly welcomed and greeted with fanfare a separate vessel that had transported a significant amount of relief supplies to the country.
That ship, nicknamed "a modern Granma" following the name of the boat in which Castro returned to Cuba to launch the revolution in the 1950s, delivered solar panels, drugs, formula milk, bicycles and provisions.
Wider International Climate
Volunteers and NGOs have been at the forefront of initiatives to bring humanitarian aid to Cuba beginning in January, when a oil sanctions on the Communist-run nation began.
Global bodies have since warned of ""critical" shortages of supplies, with over fifty thousand surgeries cancelled in Cuba due to energy rationing.
Political pressure have intensified lately, with remarks from different representatives highlighting the complicated state of diplomatic ties.
Responding to recent proposals, a senior Cuban official stated firmly that "the socialist system of Cuba is not subject to discussion."
Accounts suggest that preliminary steps of negotiations commenced, although their present status remains unclear.
The naval forces affirmed it was pledged to using every available asset at its disposal to discover the vessels and secure the safety of the crews.
To date, there has been no public statement on the missing boats by the government in Havana.
