The Red Devils Poised to Sign German Forward Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are finalising sealing the deal for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from Bayern Munich.
A Major Acquisition for United
The forward, with six months left on her contract, has been a consistent goalscorer for her club and the national team. She has netted over 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for her country. This signing will be seen as a major signing for the Women’s Super League team.
Her exit from Munich was expected since she was seen holding back emotions while applauding the German club’s fans following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
It was reported in December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its leading forwards. Per multiple sources, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.
Consistent Goalscoring to Boost United's Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s signing should represent a major boost to the team's forward line. She has been remarkably reliable with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- Over seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the last term, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Momentum at Carrington
The acquisition of Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when United seem to be building positive momentum.
Recent performances include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the winter break has seen further business:
- The signing of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
On the midfielder's extension, a senior figure commented: “She has become a critical part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill enables her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having joined from a side from the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
