Madeleine McCann Brother and Sister Detail Alleged Harasser's Actions as Deeply Upsetting and Creepy
Madeleine McCann's twin siblings, Amelie and Sean, have testified in court that their encounters with an alleged stalker were extremely disturbing and unsettling. The siblings explained feeling anxious and frightened by a woman who insisted she was their long-lost sister.
Persistent Communication Described as Frightening
Testifying remotely, Amelie stated how the defendant, Julia Wandelt, reached out to her multiple times through online platforms and letters. She said the relentlessness was very scary because you don’t know what she’ll do next.
Messages from Wandelt were read in the trial, in which she described recollections of living in the McCann household that she claimed were recalled under hypnosis. She testified, It’s quite disturbing that she’s coming up with these supposed recollections, despite the fact she’s not Madeleine.
Fabricated Images Heightened Unease
The court learned that Wandelt had created pictures of herself and Amelie as children, which the state alleged were made with AI tools. A number of these images were sent through social media, while additional ones were produced physically and enclosed in a mail to Amelie.
She stated, I didn’t like it, it caused me to feel very uncomfortable. It was evident she altered the pictures to make me appear similar to her, which was quite distressing. I was aware I didn’t look like that, I knew it had been changed.
Emotional Impact on the Family
Amelie also spoke about the impact of the alleged harassment on her mother, Kate, who testified about being confronted at home by Wandelt and her co-defendant, a 61-year-old woman.
I think my mum experienced it as the hardest. My mother was harassed by the defendant more than the rest of us and I think it definitely had a negative effect on her and her wellbeing, she testified. It’s upsetting when someone’s pleading with you to accept their claims and playing with your feelings, to the point you are doubting your own judgment.
Brother's Statement on Anxiety and Online Scrutiny
In a testimony read to the trial, her brother said that personally, he had not been severely affected by Wandelt's alleged harassment. But he had been upset that she was drawing social media scrutiny, with people saying nasty and unfair things about his parents.
In the event that she was not mentally ill and was fully aware she is not Madeleine, yet makes these claims, that would be very upsetting for me, he testified. I do not believe she is my sibling. The fact that Julia is engaging in this behavior has caused me a great deal of anxiety and I consider it profoundly troubling.
